On a recent trip to Rio we took a couple of hours to go visit some of the city sights and our guide took us to the Selaron steps. For those of you who have been there, I am sure, you can still feel the vibrancy of the red tiles and the excitement of the tiles of sights from all over the world. All this is in the middle of a pretty ordinary Rio street. Walking up the stairs was an exciting adventure. However, when I walked down the steps I was struck by two things - how ordinary the steps look downward followed immediately by how extraordinary is the achievement of the Chilean-born Brazilian artist Jorge Selaron who conceived the idea. This made me think how everything starts with a thought, with some imagination and the courage to take action.
A major part of what I do now is to nurture ideas, to encourage the people coming up with the ideas and help them shape these ideas. That is why, I cannot be but moved when I see ideas that not only survive the early forming phase but also come to fruition and thrive.
Creativity and innovation are buzz words now but it all boils down to a three simple (not easy) steps:
Use your imagination - Everything starts with a thought, with an idea. Help your ideas grow by being gentle and nurturing at the beginning; by following your vision and listening to what your customers say and adapting
Take action; take massive action – my boss likes to say “Ideas are cheap”. He is right. A lot of people have ideas but very few take action.
Be brave; have courage – I have been guilty of having ideas and not taking action because of excuses like “oh, well. I do not know much about that topic so, if it has not been done before, this means that it is not needed”. What is behind this is fear of being wrong, being ridiculed if you fail. Ignore that!
Use your imagination. Have courage. Take action! The difference between ordinary steps and world-class sight is imagination and action!
